Configuring a Cisco 678 router for use with LapLink
Document relates to: LapLink Gold 11.5, LapLink Classic, LapLink Gold 11.x, LapLink for Win95, LapLink Technical, LapLink Professional, LapLink Gold, LapLink NT, LapLink 2000
SUMMARY I have a Cisco 678 router. How can I configure it to allow LapLink connections from the Internet?
SOLUTION You must configure the router to forward TCP port 1547 to the Laplink host computer. Cisco 678 routers use a command line interface (CBOS) for configuration.
Note 1: You cannot connect two Laplink computers over the Internet through the same Internet connection, since they will share the same public IP address. If you are testing this connection before going on the road, please use our Live Chat support. Laplink technicians can remotely test the connection for you. Before contacting a technician for testing, you must work through the steps below under: Forwarding Port 1547.
Note 2: If you are running an older CBOS version then you may need to upgrade to a newer CBOS that supports the commands outlined in this document. Please contact your Internet Service Provider for instructions on upgrading your CBOS version.
Note 3: The steps below allow only one LapLink host computer to be accessible from the Internet. If you plan to have more than one Laplink host available behind the same router, please see Technical Document #618: Changing the Firewall or Router Port used by LapLink Gold 11 for more information.
Forwarding Port 1547:
1. Obtain the private (LAN) IP address of the Laplink host computer. See Technical Document 204: How to Determine the IP Address on a Computer for more information.
2. Telnet into the router by clicking Start ->Programs -> Run. In the Open field type in “telnet 10.0.0.1”. Please note that the 10.0.0.1 address is the default IP address set for the inside Ethernet interface of the router. This address may be different. Contact your Internet Service Provider if you are unable to telnet to the 10.0.0.1 address or you are unsure what this address is.
3. You should see the following login prompt:
User Access Verification Password:
You will need to know the login password as well as the enable password for your Cisco router. If you are not sure what these passwords are, please contact your Internet Service Provider and they will be able to provide you with this information. Type in your password at the login prompt
4. If you entered in the correct password, you will be taken to a cbos> prompt. Type in the enable command and press Enter. Enter in the enable password.
cbos>enable Password: ********
5. Next type in the following command:
cbos#set nat entry add X.X.X.X 1547 tcp
Where X.X.X.X is the private IP address of the LapLink host computer from step 1 above.
6. Save the configuration and exit by typing in the following commands:
cbos#write Warning: traffic may pause while NVRAM is being modified NVRAM written. cbos#exit
If you need additional information or support, please contact Cisco Technical Assistance Center.
Connecting to a Laplink host computer behind the Cisco router:
Once the port forwarding has been accomplished, you are ready to connect in Laplink from a different location. Please see Technical Document # 201: Using ILS to Connect over the Internet with LapLink. -Or- Technical Document # 203: Using IP Addresses to Manually Connect over the Internet with LapLink.
