Advanced Troubleshooting for the Original USB Cable

SUMMARY

I have followed the steps to install the Original USB cable. What can I further do to get connected?

 

SOLUTION

If all efforts to detect the LapLink USB cable have failed, it is possible that the computer’s USB host device drivers have become corrupted. If this is the case, one option is to delete the devices and have Windows redetect and install them upon reboot.
WARNING: The following process involves making changes to the system registry. Before you do this, ensure you have a good backup of the registry and are familiar with methods to recover in case of a system error. See Technical Document 111: How do I Backup and Restore the Windows Registry for more information.

Follow these steps:

  1. Remove the LapLink USB cable from the computer.

  2. Reboot the computer into Safe Mode. See Technical Document 102, How Do I Boot Into Safe Mode for more information.

  3. Right-click My Computer and click Properties.

  4. On the Device Manager tab, click the plus (+) sign next to Universal Serial Bus Controller.

  5. Click each item listed, and click Remove.

  6. When all USB items are removed, click OK. If prompted, do not reboot.

  7. From the Windows Start menu, click Run.

  8. In the Open field, type REGEDIT and click Enter.

  9. Note: Remember to make the backup of the registry before proceeding.

  10. Navigate to the following key categories:


  11. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CURRENTCONTROLSET\SERVICES\CLASS\USB
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ENUM\USB

  12. Highlight each one, and click Delete.

  13. Exit Regedit and reboot the computer normally. Windows will detect all USB devices and reinstall the drivers for them.

  14. Note: You may be asked for the Windows Installation CD during this process in order to complete the detection of the hardware.
  15. Plug in the LapLink USB cable into both computers. Window’s Plug and Play systems should see the cable and automatically install the driver.
