Compatibility Issues with LapLink's Original USB Cable

Document relates to:   LapLink 2000, LapLink Gold, LapLink Professional, LapLink Technical

SUMMARY

Note: This document contains information about the original USB cable, not the USB Network cables (either gold or purple). Click here to see pictures of the various cables.

The following items are known issues for LapLink USB connections. If you do not have one of the configurations described in this document and you're having trouble connecting over USB in LapLink, see Technical Document 205, Troubleshooting a USB Connection for more information.

SOLUTION

Supported Operating Systems

The original LapLink USB cable supports

  • Windows ME

  • Windows 98

  • Windows 95, OSR2 using version 4.03.1214 of the USB Driver Supplement

  • Note:To determine the version of Windows 95 you are running,
    1. Right-click My Computer, and click Properties.

    2. Locate the version number under System. The supported versions are 4.00.950B (OSR2) and 4.00.950C (OSR2.5). Versions 4.00.950 and 4.00.950A are not supported.

    3. To determine your version of the USB driver supplement, run the USB diagnostic utility, USBPROBE.EXE.

Cable Compatibility
LapLink's USB connections require a proprietary LapLink original USB or USB Network cable. Standard USB cables will not work, due to the Master-Slave nature of a LapLink USB connection.

Hardware Compatibility
Your particular computer might not have problems, even if it uses the listed hardware, since every computer configuration is unique. In addition, hardware vendors might have updated their hardware configurations since these issues were found.

To determine the USB chip set on your computer:
  1. Right-click My Computer, and click Properties.

  2. Click Device Manager, and then expand the Universal Serial Bus Controller category.

  3. Under Universal Serial Bus Controller, look for Host Controller or Host. That item identifies the host controller chip set.

The chip set used is also identified by the USB diagnostic utility, USBPROBE.EXE.

VIA chip set: USB host controllers using the VIA VT83C572/VT82C586 PCI to USB Universal Host chip set have been found to cause the following problems:
  • Connections are dropped

  • A second LapLink USB cable is not configured correctly

See VIA's web site for updated 4-in-1 drivers.

NEC chip set: USB host controllers using the NEC PCI to USB Open Host Controller chip set have been found to cause the following problem:
  • Can't connect to other computers

This chip set has been found on Toshiba Satellite Pro laptop computers, but may also be found on other computers or controller cards.

Intel 82371AB/EB PCI to USB Universal Host chip set on Micron notebook computers have been found to cause the following problem:
  • Can't connect to other computers

This chip set did not exhibit problems on other tested computers.

Using the USB diagnostic utility USBPROBE.EXE

USBPPROBE.EXE is a diagnostic utility used by LapLink Technical Support. It also includes information about your computer make, USB card, USB host chip set and USB driver information. Please run this utility before contacting LapLink technical support with USB problems.

To run the USB diagnostic utility:

  1. Put the LapLink USB disk in your floppy drive.

  2. In Windows Explorer, open the folder for your floppy drive (A: or B:).

  3. Double-click the USBPROBE.EXE file.

The utility will create a text file containing information about your computer, and saves it to your Windows’ desktop. The file is called USBProbe.log and can be opened with Notepad. Look for this section heading:

USB Device0:

Within that section are these lines:

DeviceDesc=OPTi 82C861 PCI to USB Open Host Controller
....
File Version Info:
CompanyName=Microsoft Corporation
FileDescription=Universal Host Controller Driver
FileVersion=4.03.1214
InternalName=uhcd.sys
LegalCopyright=Copyright © Microsoft Corp. 1981-1996
OriginalFilename=uhcd.sys
ProductName=Microsoft® Windows® Operating System
ProductVersion=4.03.1214

The first line (DeviceDesc) will note what type of USB chip set you have installed. The other highlighted lines above are the USB Driver Supplement version numbers. The version numbers must be 4.03.1214 for LapLink USB to work in Windows 95.
